Free Advice

As I was leaving the beach on Sunday, I noticed this "situation" in between the sand and Casa Del Mar. I couldn't help myself, I had to walk up to them and ask what they were doing (and of course take a few pictures). They said they didn't have any special training, they were just two people giving their opinion on anything anyone asked. Come again? So you mean to tell me, you're just sitting here, getting asked questions by strangers, giving your advice, and they're TAKING IT??? I couldn't believe it. When I asked them why, they said "because it's fun". Well, I guess everyone gets their kicks in different ways, but this wouldn't exactly be my idea of fun. Not to mention, who would want to be advised by two random middle-aged men (with no special training), sitting on the Santa Monica beach? As I moved on with my day, I couldn't help but wonder, what makes advice valuable to people. Is it a reliable source? A masters degree in psychology? Or is it just a friendly face offering you something for free? What do you think? Would you take advice from these guys?

On a separate note, Fabsugar featured me again yesterday as their "Look of the Day"! Read their post here. I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!

There's a slight chance I might be moving out to SM, so I'm excited!
I've no degrees in pysch, but my friends all come to me for advice, since I'm very good at verifying their feelings and seeing both sides of the situation. However, when it comes to my life, I'm AWFUL at decisions.

Haha that's too funny, where in the world did they come up with the idea to do that?!!?

That's hilarious. They look totally credible :)

Hahahah - this is too funny! I guess that it could be nice to hear what someone (who doesn't know you) thinks about a situation - with no preconceptions and no fear of hurting your feelings. I bet it would be pretty entertaining to do that for a day....

Congrats on FabSugar and have a lovely weekend!

I think that is hilarious! I bet those guys heard a bunch of funny stories that day. Maybe they're writing a book...or maybe they have a blog too and were running low on content? haha.

Free Advice? How can you go wrong? These guys look pretty reliable, I'm sure they would steer you in the right direction.

Honestly, I think the more removed from a situation someone is, the more someone is inclined to accept advice from them. Thus the reason Psychologists are in such high demand. At the same time, I would never accept advice from those two! :P

Yayay! Congratulations on your FabSugar feature, my love!! :)

That is hilarious!!!! When I was at Purdue, there were two guys who would stand in the middle of campus and give everyone who passed by a compliment. They liked my boots once. It became such a big deal that Kodak sponsered them to give free compliments all over the country on tour. It was really cool.

Congrats on your fab feature!!! =) It is no surprise that you are getting noticed though. I'd raid your closet in a heartbeat. And of course have you tell me how to wear it =)

Val,

This is hilarious! I just had to laugh multiple times. I guess we do live in a free country and if it is passing time for them . . . but I couldn't take this seriously.

Congrats on being on Fabsugar again!! That outfit is my favorite.

Have a great weekend!

Haha that is so funny. I mean, I guess it would be kind of interesting listening to the problems and situations of the various people who actually decided to come talk to you. I wonder if they get many?

Nathalie said...

oh this is so funny... but actually I don't think it is such a bad idea. For someone having noone to talk to... he/she will be really thankful, and if it is fun to them. I think it is a really nice gesture

i think these two men are hilarious and have a super sense of humor. i think i would have asked some random off the wall question that was completely BS to to have fun.

torrie said...

Depends how desperate I am. Sometimes I've been p.r.e.t.t.y desperate for advice, so maybe during those times had I seen two men 'offering it up'... :)

I would love to come up with some insanely ridiculous story to see what kind of advice these guys come up with. Too bad I can't lie or keep a straight face to save my life. Haha, oh well! Definitely interesting though.

Also congratulations on being featured on Glamour so often these days. What an honor!

Have a wonderful weekend!

How they even thought to come up with that idea is odd! I can think of better ways to spend my time! lol hugs doll

that's so funny! i definitely would have asked a question for the heck of it but i don't know that i would follow it unless they actually said something that resonated with me. that is hilarious though.

congratulations on the fabsugar press — you're getting famous right before our eyes! have a wonderful weekend :)

That is so funny! I would love to set up shop like that and just tell it like it is, but I know I wouldn't actually take a stranger's advice.

What I've found is that people really don't take free advice at all. If you pay for it, it becomes more valuable. Your sister could tell you one thing, and you ignore it... But hear the same thing from a counselor/doctor/consultant or whatever, and you will take it. Paying for something elevates its value.

Two guys with obviously unlimited entrepreneurial spirit - just great! I would love to hear the quality of their advise. (It probably doesn't need a psychology degree, but I guess life experience, intelligence and sensitivity towards others all help.)

Unknown said...

First off, while I would never take advice from those two, I do admire their "cheekiness"! Secondly, fabsugar knows a good thing when they see it! That white outfit was/is FAB!!!

hiyaluv said...

i knew that white outfit was going to get you featured again! congrats!

as for free advice-that is too funny! kind of creepy at the same time. I like your question-what makes advice valuable? what makes somebody have clout in giving advice. i will think about that next time somebody tries to give me advice or i ask for it.

gina

That is funny. Wonder how they came up with the idea. Perhaps they're trying to get out of housework by giving 'free advice'??
Congrats on being featured in Fabsugar.
