ROAD TRIP!!!

Gabe with his driving cap. Keep your eyes on the road, Gabe.
Over the weekend, Gabe and I went to Fresno to see my family and some old friends. I grew up in Fresno so for me I consider it "going home" for the weekend. It's always such a fun experience to make the trip home and it seems to evoke wonderful memories and strong feelings of nostalgia. Gabe and I made the road trip on Friday with cinnamon bears, red vines, trail mix, and Diet Cokes in tow. During the four hour drive, Gabe and I get very creative in order to pass the time. These are some of our favorite car games/pass times.

The Book of Questions
making up funny songs and car dances
eye spy (Kati and Bunz also love this game)
Six degrees of Kevin Bacon
name that movie using quotes from our favorites (I only know about 5 movies, but I know them well)
eating lots of snacks
chewing bubble gum and having bubble blowing contests
having deep discussions about reality television shows (we're currently discussing American Idol)

What are your favorite road trip games?

Buy This, Not That

Remember this beautiful pink silk top from Piperlime that I found a few weeks ago? I loved it because it was bright, delicate, silky, and fun for summer date nights. Well, I just found a similar tank that comes in blue and purple for only $13.50! What a steal! I'm going to buy the Forever 21 tank in blue and purple and I'll love them that much more because of their price. What items are you obsessing over for summer?

Best Cheap Restaurants in L.A.

I'm sure you've all heard me rave about Doughboys. The portions are enormous, the menu is extensive, and the red velvet cake is the best in town. Make sure to try the French Onion Soup or the Pulled Pork Sandwich (both are the size of your torso) and you won't be disappointed. If you go on the weekends, there will be a line. Save yourself the time and go on a weeknight for a casual/inexpensive dinner (no corkage fees) and be sure to try the red velvet cake!

Although Bay Cities is more of a Deli than a Restaurant, I think it deserves a place on this list. The crowds at this place are intense and for good reason. Do yourself a favor and order online ahead of time to avoid the lines. Make sure to try the Godmother on the Italian Roll (Genoa Salami, Mortadella, Coppacola, Ham, Prosciutto, Provolone, and the most delicious Italian dressing) and order yourself a large. Who are you kidding.

Sham is one of my new neighborhood favorites, as it's walking distance from our apartment in Santa Monica. They serve Mediterranean/Syrian food that will leave you wanting more. The Kabobs, Shawarma, and homemade pita bread will melt in your mouth. They also do not charge a corkage fee, so bring your own wine and enjoy a flavorful laid-back dinner for a reasonable price. But don't make the mistake of planning to go on a Monday because they're closed. I learned this the hard way.

If you're in the mood to eat a lot of meat, Baby Blues is your friend. Their Southern style Barbecue is the best around. All entrees come with 2 "fixins" and corn bread, which leads to a very large meal. Go with a group and order the "Feed Bags" so you can taste everything. My favorites Platters are the Memphis Ribs, Baby Back Ribs, Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket, and the Grilled Shrimp. The best "Fixins" are the Mac & Cheese, Collard Greens, Blues on the Cob, and Sauteed Okra. When we leave here, we're usually so full and our pants fit a bit tighter. My favorite kind of place!

While El Tarasco is certainly not known for the ambiance, it's infamous for good Mexican food. The best thing on the menu is the Burrito Super Deluxe with Carnitas. You'll love it so much that you'll finish it and then feel like you're going to vomit. It's awesome.

Taco Tuesday

Gap jeans, Modern Vintage boots, Forever 21 tee, BCBG leather jacket

On Tuesday afternoon, I met up with Christine and her friend Lauren who was visiting from Maryland for the week. As usual, we went to Cabo Cantina in Venice/Marina del Rey for their all you can eat tacos, steak nachos and 2 for 1 happy hour special. Christine and I did the grandma special and split the 2 for 1 red wine order. Gabe and I lived 3 blocks from Cabo Cantina up until May of last year and it still holds a special place in our hearts. It may not have the best bathroom situation (unisex single stalls and often long lines), but you can't beat the prices or the steak nachos.

Pie Heaven

Dotting the apples with butter

Vanilla ice cream is essential with apple pie.
Gabe loves pie.

As I've said before, Gabe loves pie. His favorites are blueberry and apple so I decided to make him an apple pie on Sunday. I used the recipe from More From Magnolia and while I'm still perfecting the crust, the pie tasted delicious. Sarah bought this cookbook for me as a birthday gift one year and I continue to find the best recipes from it. Gabe and I frequently have this "situation" where he'll come home looking forward to eating something and I'll have already eaten it. Thankfully pie isn't my biggest weakness, so hopefully I'll be able to hold back on eating the rest of it before he makes it home again. This reminds me of one of my favorite Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey.

When you die, if you get a choice between going to regular heaven or pie heaven, choose pie heaven. It might be a trick, but if it's not, mmmmmmm, boy.

Polka Dots and Stripes

David Meister-Neiman Marcus $410; Elizabeth and James-Shopbop $245; Nanette Lapore-Shopbop $328; Anthropologie-Vanilla Bean Blouse $128

Blue Life-Pink Mascara $75; Tory Burch-Bergdorff Goodman $225; Splendid-Shopbop $46; Forever 21 $14.80

Two of the big trends for Spring/Summer 2010 are Stripes and Polka Dots. I've always been a fan of both and love seeing them coming back. Since I've never been a big print person, I feel like polka dots and stripes are the perfect way to mix up my solid color wardrobe. I've attached a few of my favorite items in these categories and while some of these are out of my price range, I'll be on the lookout for less expensive substitutes.

Girls' Night In

Jessica and Whitney came over last night for a "girls' night in" with lasagna, champagne, and rice krispie treats. Gone are the days when it was more fun to go out. I feel like I'm always happy to stay in and wear something comfortable (as seen in my juicy sweatsuit shown above) and devote all our time to chatting with each other. The three of us have a long history of friendship that began in college and has continued to change and grow over the years. I'm so thankful for both of them and it's always nice to reconnect and spend an evening together.
